Past Continuous Tense in Urdu

Definition: In the past continuous tense, an action continued until a certain time in the past. This tense is used to talk about a particular time in the past.

Helping verb: The helping verbs of past continuous are ( was, were ). Was is used with the singular subjects, and were is used with the plural subjects.

پہچان : اردو کے ایسے فقرے جن کے آخر میں رہا تھا، رہی تھی، رہے تھے، تو وہ فعل ماضی جاری کہلاتے ہیں۔

Positive sentence

In the positive sentence of past continuous tense, we use the ing form of the verb with helping verbs.

سادہ فقرے : اس زمانے میں ہم اعمدادی فعل کے ساتھ آئی ع جی فارم کا استعمال کرتے ہیں۔

Formula: subject+helping verb+1stv+ing+object+.

• He was eating food. وہ کھانا کھا رہا تھا۔
• We were reading book. ہم کتاب پڑھ رہے تھے۔

Negative sentence

In the negative sentence of past continuous tense we use not before ing form to show negative statement.

منفی فقرے : اس زمانے میں ہم نوٹ کا استعمال کرتے ہیں۔

Formula : subject+ helping verb+not+1stv+ing+object+.

• He was not eating food. وہ کھانا نہیں کھا رہا تھا۔
• We were not reading book. ہم کتاب نہیں پڑھ رہے تھے۔

Interrogative sentence

In the Interrogative sentence of past continuous tense, we use helping verbs in the beginning of the sentence and we use a question mark at the end of the sentence.

سوالیہ فقرے : اس زمانے میں ہم اعمدادی فعل کو جملے کے شروع میں استعمال کرتے ہیں اور سوالیہ نشان کو جملے کے آخر میں لگاتے ہیں۔

Formula: helping verb+subject+1stv+ing+object+?

• Was he eating food. کیا وہ کھانا کھا رہا تھا؟
• Were we reading book? کیا ہم کتاب پڑھ رہے تھے؟

Formal sentence

In the formal sentence of past continuous tense, we use helping verbs at the starting of the sentence and not is used after the subject.

ادبی فقرے : اس زمانے میں ہم اعمدادی فعل کو جملے کے شروع میں استعمال کرتے ہیں اور سبجیکٹ کے بعد نوٹ کا استعمال کرتے ہیں۔

Formula: helping verb+subject+not+1stv+ing+object+?

• Was he not eating food? کیا وہ کھانا نہیں کھا رہا تھا۔
• Were we not reading book? کیا ہم کتاب نہیں پڑھ رہے تھے؟

Informal sentence

In the informal sentence of past continuous tense, we use the short forms of the helping verbs.

غیر ادبی فقرے : اس زمانے میں ہم اعمدادی فعل کے شارٹ فارم کا استعمال کرتے ہیں۔

Formula : helping verb+not+subject+1stv+ing+object+?

• Wasn’t he eating food? کیا وہ کھانا کھا رہا تھا؟
